UCR School of Medicine Education Building II

Following a two month design-build competition and two years of construction, the campus opened the doors to the new School of Medicine Education Building II (SOM EDII) in fall of 2023. The five-story building, located next to the existing School of Medicine Education Building on the east side of campus, features state-of-the-art facilities that support modern medical education. The site location for the new SOM EDII provides an exciting opportunity to claim what once was back-of-house space and transforms it into a new School of Medicine Precinct.

The new SOM EDII is integrated into the daily routines of undergraduate and graduate students, academics and administrators, staff and visitors. Maximizing the hillside topography of the site, the building’s placement provides for multiple front doors on three different levels, and activates the outdoor space surrounding the building. This connection to the landscape is also expressed by the inclusion of large exterior terraces on each level of the building.
