Point Loma Nazarene University Science Center

The $28 million project is composed of a 36,000 square-foot complex connected by an elevated walkway. The complex includes a stainless-steel wall with alpha and omega cutouts that symbolize the intersection of science and faith. The metal screen also has the practical function of reflecting heat while allowing natural light to pass through creating dappled light on the outdoor gathering spaces.

The site slopes approximately 25 feet from the northeast corner down to the 1st floor level of the Rohr building to the south and continues sloping down another 10 feet. The topography presented challenges but offered unique opportunities for social spaces of various scales, stormwater infiltration, and a planting palette suited for diverse micro-climates, all while celebrating the extraordinary views of the Pacific and respecting the campus’s communal and approachable nature. Whether you are sunning yourself on a grassy slope or gathering for a University celebration, the science complex offers students, faculty, and visitors a place of learning in a remarkable setting.
