Ocean Discovery Institute

The Living Lab campus is designed around the theme “if I understand how the world works, I can make a difference.” Spurlock’s role includes transforming the San Diego-based non-profit Ocean Discovery Institute’s vision into physical form by taking cues from functional needs, site topography and community input. The Living Lab will allow for the implementation of programs providing scientific inquiry opportunities for urban youths from diverse backgrounds. The facility will include both indoor and outdoor labs, interactive learning opportunities and open space for local students and community. The project includes many sustainable features including a series of retention basins slowing and managing rainwater runoff heading toward the adjacent canyon and watershed. Additionally, the project aims for LEED Platinum certification.
