Mercado del Barrio
This mixed-use project brings much needed affordable housing and commercial development to the Barrio Logan neighborhood in South San Diego. The design provides a flexible open space framework based on the Mesoamerican stepped fret motif, connecting plazas and green spaces to the bay through the use of enhanced paving and drought tolerant plantings. The plazas were designed with community gathering in mind; flexibly accommodating both neighborhood celebrations and smaller community events.
This LEED certified project includes porous paving, a bioswale for stormwater collection and treatment, drought tolerant planting, and over 100 new shade trees to reduce urban heat island effect. To complement the powerful, nationally acclaimed murals at the adjacent Chicano Park, we collaborated with regional and local artists to integrate new murals and mosaics into the architecture and open spaces.
