UCSD University Center Bike & Pedestrian Improvements

The overarching goal for this project was to create a safe and beautiful place for all users that respects, preserves and restores the iconic Grove Park. Spurlock created separate paths for bicyclists and pedestrians working with existing grades to the greatest extent possible to minimize disturbance to existing trees. The resulting design provided a number of enhancements to the project including improved safety by providing separate, dedicated, and clearly-marked paths for bicycles and pedestrians. By separating bicyclists and pedestrians, a safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable experience for all users was achieved. By working with existing grades, the need for handrails and guardrails on pedestrian and bicycle paths was minimized. Seating areas along the path are provided for pedestrians to stop and enjoy the surrounding grove and bioswale plantings.
