UCSD Academic Court

Spurlock provided the master plan for the new central activity court for the Jacobs School of Engineering. The plan established site relationship and open space connection for three new buildings and the Warren Mall. It serves as the hub of pedestrian circulation while also providing outdoor gathering spaces for student and faculty interaction. The courtyard holds artist Tim Hawkinson’s intriguing sculpture of massive granite boulders “Bear”.

The project site included design and programming of the use of the courtyard as well as subsequent work with the three architectural firms on the other academic buildings - Powell- Focht Bioengineering, Computer Science, and Cal IT2, the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology.
